Claude Code and Codex are not products you can buy. Both ship inside a subscription, so the honest comparison is between the plans that carry them: Claude Pro at $20/month and ChatGPT Plus at $20/month, the entry paid tier on each side.
At that price the deciding factor is context. Claude Pro gives the agent a 200K token window; ChatGPT Plus gives it 32K. If your coding work is mostly single-file edits and quick questions, the gap barely shows. If it means holding a repository’s worth of context in one session, it decides the comparison on its own.

The difference in packaging matters more than it looks. Codex reaches further down the price ladder, so the cheapest way to try an agentic coding tool from a major vendor is a free ChatGPT account. Claude Code starts at the paid tier but arrives with a context window nothing at that price matches.
Where Each One Wins
Claude Code is the better fit for work that is mostly reading: understanding an unfamiliar repository, planning a refactor that touches many files, reviewing a long diff. The 200K window means you can hand it the whole picture rather than feeding it in pieces, and Anthropic’s models have a reputation for holding a plan across a long session.
Codex is the better fit when the coding tool is one part of a wider subscription. On ChatGPT Plus the same $20 also buys image generation, Deep Research and the largest third-party ecosystem of any assistant. For a developer who codes daily but also writes, researches and designs, the bundle can be worth more than the context window.
Which Subscription To Buy
Buy Claude Pro if code is the main job and context is the constraint. Buy ChatGPT Plus if coding is one of several things you need from one subscription.
